Empowering the African American Community, One Mind at a Time.

The Association of Black Psychologists, Inc. is a professional organization dedicated to promoting the mental health and well-being of the African American community. With a rich history dating back to 1968, we have grown into an independent and autonomous organization with over 1400 members. Our mission is to liberate the African Mind, empower the African Character, and enliven and illuminate the African Spirit.

Our History

Founded in San Francisco in 1968, our organization was established by a group of concerned Black Psychologists who united to address the serious problems facing Black Psychologists and the larger Black community. Guided by the principle of self-determination, these psychologists and students set about building an institution that would address the long-neglected needs of Black professionals. Their goal was to have a positive impact upon the mental health of the national Black community through planning, programs, services, training, and advocacy.

Our Mission and Vision

We see our mission and destiny as the liberation of the African Mind, empowerment of the African Character, and enlivenment and illumination of the African Spirit. Our purpose is to operate exclusively for charitable and educational purposes, with a focus on promoting the mental health and well-being of the African American community. We strive to create a professional home for students and early career professionals, where they can grow and develop in an environment that is rooted in African-centered traditions.
